VALERIAN 470 mg from SOLARAY.
It is a plant present in Europe and in the temperate regions of Asia. It is grown in Central Europe, England, France, Eastern Europe, Japan and the United States . The part used is the root dried at less than 40º C. The characteristic odor of the dried plant is due to the presence of isovaleric acid, which is not present in the fresh plant.
The active compounds with iridoids, volatile oils, sesquiterpenes, pyridine alkaloids, caffeic acid derivatives . The main effect in humans is the reduction of sleep induction time. In vitro, valerenic acid decreases the degradation of GABA. Animal studies have shown an increase in GABA levels and it is believed that this is one of the mechanisms that explain the effects of Valerian. Another mechanism is the high amount of glutamine present in the plant extract. Unlike GABA, glutamine passes the blood-brain barrier where it can be converted into GABA.
Numerous studies show the sedative and tranquilizing activity of Valerian, but the mechanism of action has not yet been fully clarified. The use of Valerian in gastroenterology is probably attributed to its content of valerenic acid, which can have a spasmolytic effect.
